When choosing to learn a language, the standard languages of choice are typically Spanish or French. I ended up choosing Japanese because it was a language I felt I would be more enthusiastic in learning a language that already interested me, whereas if I chose Spanish I would not be as interested by the language.
Part of my interest for learning the Japanese language came from reading manga and light novels because the newer chapters would always be published in Japanese first, and then be translated into English. At the end of every chapter, there would be the translator asking for people to help translate the series so everyone could enjoy it.
Later on, I became more interested in the Japanese culture and how the country managed to keep their traditional values while at the same time being modern. The culture was also reflected within the language itself which was also interesting when comparing it to American culture. The differences between the two cultures also brought upon my interest in the Japanese language and I wanted to learn a language that allowed me to explore these interests at the same time.

Challenging Parts of Japanese Class
Some of the challenging aspects of Japanese class would be first, the change in alphabet and having to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. The vast amount of vocabulary is also challenging and requires a lot of hard memorization. Luckily, certain websites tend to help with the hard memorization.

Hi Alyssa. It's nice to learn our students' background and where their interests in learning Japanese come from. I hope you make the most of each class and lab session and become a Japanese master soon!!

Hi.
DeleteThank you, I will do my best.
In many ways, we share reasons for having chosen Japanese as opposed to other Romance languages. It's fun. It's challenging. It exposes us to cultures other than those in the western world. Best of luck in your 日本語!~~
